In the documentary “Känäk”, director and protagonist Yasemine Hickl
embarks on a journey through Vienna. She meets people who, like herself,
are children of guest workers, and engages in conversations about family,
religion, honor, and the deep sense of being torn between their parents homeland
and their own upbringing in Austria:
“We came as guest workers – Who are we today?”
The film is a journey through a wide range of life realities, shaped by the search for identity, generational conflict, and questions of belonging. Along the way, Yasemine also delves deeply into her own personal story: she travels to Turkey to visit her father, whom she hasn’t seen since his deportation 30 years ago.
